Abstract
Clinical observation was performed on a hundrea cases of carcinoma of the breast for eight
years from March, 1963 to March, 1971 at Presbyterian Medical Center, Chun Ju, Korea.
1. Ninty eight out of 100 cases were female. The ratio of women to men was 49:1 in this series.
Thirty one patients fell between 40¡49 years of age and this was the most frequent age distri
bution. The mean age was 47.8 years.
2. The most prominent symptom was painless mass. The average delay between the first symp
tom and the initial examination was long. Only 49 cases came to see doctor within an year after
the tumor being found.
3. Seventy one patients had borne more than three children. Single woman was onle one and
eight women were barron in this series. Most children have been raising by breast feeding here
in country in Korea.
4. The carcinoma of forty one cases of this series originated in the upper outer quadrant. The
next most frequent are the lesions of upper inner quadrant, sixteen in number of the cases.
Only five cases originated in the subar eclar region. The site of original lesion was not described
in thirty one cases.
5. Curative treatment was applicable in forty three cases among the 100 cases when they were
first examined.
6. Now we are following the cases but the time is not long enough to show a five-year survival
rate. But until now, we got the temporary result like followings; the five-year survival rate,
21%; 40year survival rate,32%l and 3-year survival rate was 37%. We are expecting that we
will be able to say the 5 year survival rate about the whole cases those we are following,
in a few years.
7. Among patients who had treated with palliative procedure, no case lived longer than 4 years.
Eleven cases (38%) with the palliative treatment have died within an year and 18 cases (62%)
were dead within 2 years after the treatment.
8. Seventy three out of 75 cases in which the clinician thought he could feel enlarged lymphnodes
tumor metastasis in the pathologial specimens.
9. Among 29 cases with axillary metastasis which had treated by curative procedure, five cases
(17%) have lived more than 5 years and eleven cases (38%) have already died of the carcinoma.
10. In nine cases without axillary metastasis which got curative procedure, three cases (33.3%)
have lived more than 5 years and only one cases was dead in four years.
11. The most frequent site of distant metastasis was supraclavicular region (36 cases). The rema
ins in descending order of frequency were lungs and mediast, opposite axilla, bone, liver and
ovaries.

in the axillae, showed tumor metastasis in the pathological specimen and 7 cases out of 15 cases
in which the clinician thought he could not have felt any metastatic axillary nodes, showed
